Interconnects are not transparent. Above about 5 Gbps, the eyes in high speed serial links collapse because of four chief problems related to interconnect design. Being aware of these problems, and how the physical design of circuit boards and interconnects affect these problems, is the first step in designing them out. We will introduce the four problems, their root cause, and how to minimize their impact in serial links operating at 5 Gbps and above.
